july 4th camping trip

Join your fellow members of the Carolina Kayak Club for a wonderful July 4th weekend of camping, kayaking, games, and cookouts. Come out and enjoy the fun with your friends and meet new friends.

We’ve got campsite #5 for Thurs. – Sat. nites. Vista Point allows 35 campers per site at any one time. Y’all can come and camp one night or all three. Drinking water and showers are located nearby. If you’re only camping one or two nights, please indicate which nights you’re camping on the forum so someone else can camp the night you’re not.

We’re not gonna run you ragged with a lot of planned activities. This is your weekend to relax and kick back. On Friday evening, Trisha is making teriyaki chicken for all (provided by the club). Bring a side dish that serves about 8. You’re on your own for other meals, although Saturday night would be a great time for hot dogs and hamburgers…

There will be time for games. Trisha is bringing water polo and plans on doing this when there is a good sized crowd to enjoy this. We can do it as many times as people want to—as the polo set will be there all weekend.

I also heard that we might do a wet exit, reentry, assisted rescue session, if there are takers.

One or two of our members have volunteered to lead a morning class in flexibility, which is so important to us paddlers!

And at least one member told me she was bringing her husband & sail boat. Pray for a nice breeze!

The full moon is Monday, July 6th, so there’ll be lots of light for moonlit paddles. Be sure to bring a white light if you want to paddle after dark or before dawn. A pre-dawn paddle is my favorite time on the water…

What to do besides paddling:

•The Vista Point Trail is a 3 mile foot path allowing an easy stroll along the lake. Biking is prohibited on the path.
•Swimming
•Campfire s’mores & stories
• Birdwatching
• Chillaxing

I really enjoyed the relaxed pace of the weekend even though I paddled less than if we had a structured one day event. The moonlight paddles were the bomb and I also enjoyed working on rolling skills with Dawn close to shore.
Food was great, Thanks Trisha and all who pitched in. Thanks for the bacon and eggs Dawnie and for the coffee Gumby Damnit.
It was good of Dave to make a cameo appearance even if he didn't get his paddle wet for offload the boats (Ain't Love Grand?) OMG, a special thanks to Crystal for her intensive training and progress on Dave. The Match Light Moment will forever be etched in my mind - You Go Gurl.
Eva and Tomas are just a special couple to me, love them, mean it, hope they have their green cards and stay forever.
Then there is Pam and Craig, another sweet couple in a canoe and a kayak held together by Nutilla :)
Only one bad moment to speak of and that was when April did a header after tripping over some logs i placed near the fire pit. I felt like so bad about it but happy she was able to stay and Spence didn't whoop me.
Lars, Joe, Betty, Leslie, Robin Sue Barth, Frank, Alan, Michael, ....oh heck, I can't remember all the names but you know who you are.
Let's do it again real soon
Dan
